NEWARK, NJ — In Islam, Ramadan is a month of celebration, gathering, hospitality, family and friends breaking fast over bountiful meals, often at Mosque with the entire community.

Given the global pandemic, the collective aspects of Ramadan have been canceled this year. Though iftar may be a little lonelier under quarantine, Muslims in Newark are making the best of a difficult situation by serving their community however they can this Ramadan.

Omar Bareentto, secretary of the Islamic Society of Essex County in the Central Ward, is a transplant from Minneapolis, Minnesota, who normally relies on his masjid, family and friends to break fast. In a COVID-19-shuttered Newark, all he has is a roommate who doesn’t observe the holiday, so iftar hasn’t been much of an event.

“It’s just tough not being around your loved ones, or going to your mosque and being with people who share the same commitment you’ve made throughout the day,” he said. “I’ve been really spoiled by my mom’s cooking, so I’m used to these large spreads. I have a really massive family back home — sometimes when we break fast it’s 40, 50 people.”

While Bareentto says it would be a fool’s errand for him to attempt to replicate a home-style iftar, he’s been trying to keep it exciting by ordering different cuisines. He video chats with his family, too, to talk and touch base (just not during dinner, because seeing what they’re eating would make him miss home).

“Not having family around and friends, when I’m breaking fast, it’s not the event that it used to be,” he said. “It’s just me, watching Netflix. Me and a burrito.”

Bareentto would also typically head to the masjid some nights for prayer and iftar with the larger community, a time-honored tradition that also provides free meals to the public. For many Muslims in Newark, choosing to break fast at the mosque isn’t just for the sense of community, but to feed their families.

Recognizing its role as an essential food source to those in need, The Islamic Society of Essex County teamed up with Central Ward Councilwoman LaMonica McIver’s office to launch drive-thru iftar.

Since many of Newark’s economically disadvantaged residents don’t own a car, McIver’s team and the Islamic Society of Essex County have been bringing iftar to the community.

“A lot of people rely on mosques to break their fasts, and the mosques provide charitable meals to individuals. That’s especially true in Newark, a lot of people who attend the mosque are economically disadvantaged, unfortunately, so we’ve thought of an innovative way to give them meals,” Bareentto said.

The endeavor has been a mutually beneficial deal for both partnering restaurants and the community. With business down during the quarantine, Pita Square owner Mike Eldib said the orders keep his team busy and give them meaningful work.

“They help us, we help them. It’s not that busy, we don’t have walk-ins, we don’t have deliveries. But we still want to help the community,” he said.

Eldib packs around 50 meals a day, which McIver’s team picks up to deliver around sundown to the community members most in need. For seniors and people with disabilities who can’t get very far on their own, the act of service is a welcome gesture from the city.

“We’re excited to be able to help our Muslim community observe their religious holiday,” McIver said.

In April, McIver’s office announced it would be teaming up to feed senior citizens by pooling money from sponsors like the Hanini Group and using it to purchase meals from local restaurants. Drive-thru Ramadan is an extension of that program.

NEWARK, NJ – Around noon on a typical day, the city streets are usually bustling with office workers and residents grabbing coffee, snacks or a meal at many of the cafes and eateries that make up the downtown area. But COVID-19 has quieted lunch time at the state’s largest city, where approximately 100,000 people commute daily to for work. In an effort to bolster the local economy and help homebound seniors, Central Ward Councilwoman LaMonica R. McIver has partnered with city businesses on an initiative to feed senior citizens.”We are grateful for this partnership. I think it’s absolutely awesome,” said McIver. “These are challenging times in Newark and for the nation. It’s going to take cooperation from many stakeholders to help those in need, and I am very encouraged that people are stepping up during this crisis.”

The program is simple enough: pool money from local businesses and use that to buy food from city restaurants and cafes that would then be delivered to seniors.

“It’s a two-prong initiative. This allows people at restaurants to have income coming in,” said McIver. “And it’s nice we can drop off a free lunch for seniors and they don’t need to leave their home as well.”

The initiative started because local eateries, which can be open for pickup and delivery, are not getting enough customer business due to the lack of office workers in downtown. And there have been numerous news reports of senior citizens who have been too infirm to go and buy food or have trouble finding food at grocery stores, where shelves have been picked bare.

For the program’s initial foray, owners of Pita Square and Halal Guys, both on Halsey Street, are providing between them more than 2,500 meals to seniors during the month of April. Hanini Group, a real estate firm based in Newark, is serving as sponsor. Different senior housing in the Central Ward have been recipients. Bike couriers are delivering the meals along with food being handed out in front of apartment buildings.

Partners in the program plan on contacting other eateries and businesses for interest in helping expand this initiative. They also hope to continue this into May.

“This is an all-hands-on-deck situation,” said McIver. “We want to keep the lights on at local kitchens, which have always been great city ambassadors for Newark, and serve seniors, one of the most vulnerable populations hit hard by this pandemic.”

In addition to this food initiative, McIver said Prudential, the worldwide financial giant and Newark stalwart, has waived rent for its commercial tenants in Downtown Newark, located in the Central Ward. Co-founders of the company that own the New Jersey Devils made a six-figure donation to Newark in order to pay for groceries for needy families. In another food push, Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network has worked with World Central Kitchen, the non-profit group started by celebrity chef Jose Andres, to prepare and deliver food to seniors and underserved populations in the city, said McIver. World Central Kitchen is involved with other organizations in the city.

The city has also kickstarted various programs to provide millions in aid to small businesses and non-profit groups in the city, along with a slate of initiatives that will assist homeowners, arts organizations and other groups. For more on these programs, read here: https://www.newarknj.gov/news

“We must take care of each other. We must do this because people are dying. We must to do this as a Newark family. When we talk about ‘Newark strong’ it means we have to do everything we can to help each other stay alive,” said Mayor Ras Baraka recently.

In late March, Mayor Baraka implemented a strict “shelter-in-place” mandate in order to combat the spread of COVID-19. This strong advisement calls for people to stay home unless it’s for essentials or emergencies. People can still go out for the following: the grocery store, local shops for essentials, the doctor, the pharmacy, dog walking, or for fresh air in front of or back of one’s home. Essential employees are still able to leave their homes for jobs.
